FrugalFather's and Penny-Pincher's Pal Status

I have been posting my status on the Penny-Pincher's Pal Facebook page, but I have not posted an article on the Penny-Pincher's Pal blog and thought it would be a good idea to let my PPP readers and newsletter subscribers know what has been going on and why I have not been posting very many articles over the past month.

Many of the my readers know that I was diagnosed with oral cancer a little over two years ago and went through radiation and chemo treatments.  It appeared that they had gotten all the cancer and for over a year I was recovering and doing well.

Then about 7 months ago I noticed a mass in my tongue and visited my Oncologist who diagnosed the lump as a result of the radiation treatments that I had received, but sent me for an MRI and then for a CT Scan to make sure that the lump  was not cancerous.  The MRI did not find anything, but the CT Scan found abnormal metabolic activity and I was scheduled for a surgical biopsy to rule out cancer.

The surgical biopsy found that the cancer had spread and progressed into my tongue and jaw bone.  Since the tumor was so extensive the only course of treatment was surgery and I was scheduled to have the tumor removed from my tongue and jaw bone, but while waiting for the surgery date my situation worsened.  The tumor was very aggressive and was affecting my ability to swallow and breath and I was admitted into the hospital on 29 August for an emergency Tracheotomy and feeding tube.

It was determined that my original surgery date would have to be moved up and on 2 September they performed surgery.  At the time I was informed that it was likely that I would loose part if not all of my tongue and part of my right jaw bone.

Unless you have personally experienced such a diagnosis it is impossible for me to convey in writing what such a horrible diagnosis has on you.  I remember how I felt when I initially received my diagnosis of tongue cancer two years ago, but this diagnosis felt like the death penalty to me.  I would be lying to you if I were to say that it was not devastating.

Fortunately for me I have a very loving and devoted wife and a very close relationship with my adult children and friends.  The support of family and friends can not be under estimated.  Nor can the positive comments and prayers that I have received from the Penny-Pincher's Pal Facebook fans.

On September 2nd I had surgery and unfortunately they had to remove my entire tongue and most of the right lower jaw bone along with nine teeth.  The surgeon removed a large portion of my right chest muscle to replace the tissue lost from the removal of my tongue so that one day I might be able to have some speech function and be able to swallow and have the feeding tube removed.

The initial plan was for me to stay in the hospital for 10-14 days following surgery to recover.  After two weeks had passed it became apparent that one of the wounds in my neck was not healing properly and I was transferred to a Long Term Acute Care hospital for further IV antibiotic treatment and wound care.

Today I was transported to the surgeon's office for evaluation and he removed the Trach tube and recommended one more night in the hospital for observation.  However, my doctor at the hospital wants me to stay in the hospital for observation through the weekend because of her concern that in some instances there are issues with acute respiratory distress in patients following removal of the Trach tube.

So there is hope that I may be discharged from the hospital on Monday, October 3rd and will then be able to resume my writing, although on a much reduced schedule.

I know I am more than ready to get out the the hospital after over a month of being hooked up to all sorts of monitors and being continuously probed and stuck for one test or another at all times of the day and night.

The next step will be a second surgery in about a month to remove more jaw bone and replace the jaw with the Fibula bone from my leg and then have teeth implants at some future time.

The next surgery will not be be as extensive as the first one, but it will still be major surgery and require another stay in the hospital of 10-14 days.  Hopefully all will go well and it will not turn into another month long stay in the hospital.

I wish I could say that will be the end of it, but cancer doesn't give up so easy so I will then have to undergo additional radiation and chemo treatments followed by months in recovery and then a long time in physical therapy to get as much function back as possible.

I hope to one day chronicle my battle with tongue cancer in more detail in order to help others who are faced with their own battle and their loved ones to understand more about this type of cancer from hopefully, God willing, the perspective of a cancer survivor.

That is a quick overview of what has been going on over the past month and I hope that all the PPP fans will bear with me during this very trying time in my personal and professional life until I can return one day to my love of writing.

Thank you for supporting Penny-Pincher's Pal.
